As this presidential election came to a close, and my views opposed that of the president elect, it was made apparent to me that I was just a "halfie." I was told that of course I wouldn't vote for Obama, because I wasn't really black, but I find it funny simply because Obama is just like me; given birth by a white mom and black dad and raised by white family members. So my question is this, how black is black, and where did I miss out on these qualifications? Has America truly overcome the problem of race? And since when is it appropriate to call someone of mixed heritage a halfie?
This has always been an issue, since I was a very small child. I was never "black enough", and as time continues I would hope that this issue would diminish, however it has not. I'm embarrassed to say that I have most recently been called a "halfie that isn't black enough" by people that sit in the same classes I do and call themselves educated, just as I do. I simply don't understand how we can be a better America if there are now qualifications of race that one has to overcome among other things.
